Essay Rules

All contest entrants must agree to abide by the following rules.


  1. All entrants must be aged 11 through 14.

  2. No literary form other than an essay with a length of 250-300 words will be accepted.

  3. All entries must be received or postmarked by February 29, 2008. Entries must be submitted in hard copy.

  4. Only one essay per entrant.

  5. Essays must reflect the entrant’s own opinions and/or research.  Plagiarism will result in immediate disqualification.

  6. Each entrant must fill out and turn in a contest entry form, provided in hard copy or on the website at safekidsbuckleup.webs.com. Entries that cannot be matched with an entry form will not be accepted.

  7. Essays will not be returned to the authors. Upon submission, they become the property of Western Kentucky University Ad/PR program.

  8. If essays do not meet the four judging criteria, a winner will not be selected.

Contest Awards

The essays will be judged by members of the Western Kentucky University team. The essays chosen as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place will be posted on the Barren County Safe Kids Buckle Up website.

Criteria

The essays will be judged on four criterion.

  1. Creativity – does the essay provide a unique point of view? Does the essay possess compelling style or innovative storytelling techniques? 1-15 points.

  2. Writing – does the essay use grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary correctly? 1-20 points

  3. Organization – does the essay flow naturally from one idea to the next? 1-15 points.

  4. Comprehension – does the essay properly address the question posed? Does the author truly understand the topic on which he or she is writing? 1-40 points
